FEBP Releases Student Loan Default Rate Data

Washington, D.C. — The New America Foundation's Federal Education Budget Project announced Monday an update to its higher education funding database, available at www.edbudgetproject.org. The update includes the newest two- and three-year student loan cohort default rate data released last week by the U.S. Department of Education for virtually all of the nation’s higher education institutions.

Idea for Mobile App to Assist Low-Income Families Wins Award

Washington, D.C. — An idea for a mobile application that would help low-income families with their finances — formulated by two New America analysts — received an award today from the U.S. Department of Treasury as a part of its MyMoneyAppUp Challenge, which solicited the best ideas and designs for mobile applications to help Americans with their finances.

CRFB Releases Corporate Tax Reform Analysis and Interactive Online Resource

Today, the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget released a policy paper on corporate tax reform along with an interactive tax reform calculator.

In recent months, lawmakers from both parties have singled out the corporate tax code as particularly ripe for reform, and as an important complement to a comprehensive plan to reform taxes and control the debt to replace the "fiscal cliff."

Washington, DC — Today, the U.S. Census Bureau released its 2011 estimates of income, poverty, and health insurance coverage in the United States. The release shows 15 percent of Americans lived in poverty in 2011, including 21.9 percent of children under age 18. These numbers have remained static compared to the previous year rather than continuing their post-recession climb.

Stephen Burd: Fire the Student Loan Debt Collection Companies

Washington, DC — More and more student loan borrowers are falling behind on their payments, putting them in danger of getting caught up in the brutal gears of the government's student loan collection system, according to reporting by Stephen Burd, senior policy analyst in the New America Foundation's Education Policy Program.
