Legislature Sends Financial Literacy, Banking Development Districts Bills to Governor

SACRAMENTO- Bipartisan support from the California legislature yesterday sent asset building measures AB 2457 (Salas), the Financial Literacy Fund Bill and, AB 2581 (Bradford), the Banking Development Districts bill, to the Governor's desk.

FCC Paper: Consumers Only Getting Half the Broadband Speeds They Pay For

August 17, 2010

Washington DC -- Yesterday, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) released a technical paper analyzing U.S. residential broadband performance as part of the National Broadband Plan. According to the paper, actual broadband download speeds experienced by U.S. consumers appear to lag advertised speeds by roughly 50%.

California Banking Development Districts Clear Major Fiscal Hurdle

SACRAMENTO- Communities across California lacking investment from mainstream banks are the victors of Thursday's Senate Appropriations bipartisan vote to pass Assembly Bill 2581, the California Banking Development Districts bill, which encourages mainstream financial investment on Main Street and increases the financial security of unbanked Californians.

The New America Foundation's Open Technology Initiative commends the FCC for establishing an Office of Native Affairs. Tribal communities for far too long have been on the wrong side of the digital divide, with broadband access in Indian Country at less than 10 percent while analog telephone reaches only one in three families in many tribal communities.

With Open Technology Initiative Partnership, Philadelphia Receives $6.4 Million for Public Computer Centers

Today, President Barack Obama awarded a $6.4 Million grant to the City of Philadelphia to create or enhance 77 public computer centers. This project will greatly expand digital literacy in North, West and South Philadelphia to reach over 14,500 of the most vulnerable residents of the City.
